Cadence Dubus received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in Dance, Literature and Int'l Law. She completed two years of undergraduate work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Dance Technique and Choreography. She is certified in the Steele Method of Mat Pilates and received her Pilates Equipment certification from Bent Studio, NYC. She is trained in Functional Anatomy and Fascia Release through master Anatomists Irene Dowd, Peggy Gould, and the Structural Integration I series through Anatomy Trains with Tom Myers.
She opened Brooklyn Strength: Pilates and Personal Training Studio on Dec. 18th, 2010. She collaborated with co-founder Manuel Zelaya to open Brooklyn Strength Cobble Hill September 7th, 2014. She opened Brooklyn Strength Pilates and Wellness on the Columbia Street waterfront, Brooklyn NY, Dec 3rd 2018.
In 2015 her body-positive feminist approach to fitness was featured in the New York Time’s T Magazine and received several features in Refinery29 that same year. Her most recent press was a 2017 W Magazine article featuring studio client and Netflix’s GLOW star Betty Gilpin discussing her non-negative physical preparation for her role as a pro wrestler.
Cadence teaches Fascia Release, a unique workshop she developed integrating her love of anatomy and physical healing. She offers this workshop on a monthly basis at her studio, as a corporate wellness offering, and as a guest teacher at various studios locally and nationally. In 2017 she taught five of these workshops over 3 days at the Women’s Convention in Detroit as organized by the Women’s March. She offers these workshops tailored to specific populations, most recently in partnership with the OUT Foundation NYC for recent recipients of Top Surgery. In 2019 Cadence became a faculty member of Juniper Love Yoga's 2019 Yoga Certification teaching Functional Anatomy in Movement and Practice as part of the teacher training. Starting in September of 2019 she will teach a monthly master class, Yoga Lab, providing an opportunity for teachers and curious students to deep dive into the anatomy and physiology of Yoga postures, discover the roots of possible injury, and therefore practice in safety.
Cadence is a near monthly guest teacher at Circus Culture Circus School in Ithaca NY, where she helps circus folk and their community stay strong and injury-free with specialized workshops and private sessions addressing the specific needs of Circus athletes.
Cadence is certified to teach Kettlebells, through the International Kettlebell and Fitness Federation (IKFF). She is certified in pre and post-natal Pilates through the Kane School/Kinected Center. She is a graduate of the Northeastern School of Botanical Medicine, Ithaca NY. She is certified in Reiki I and II through Minka Studio, in Brooklyn NY but does practice Reiki professionally. She regularly attends continuing education workshops, including the Female Pelvis, Fascia and Functional Movement with master Integrative Kinesiologist Tom Myers and Holistic OBGYN Dr. Eden Fromberg, and most recently the diaphragm, breath and pelvis with master Yoga teacher Alex Auder.
Cadence has been a student of Iyengar, Vinyasa, Hatha and Kundalini Yoga since she was a teenager and is a student of Master Teacher, Erin Dudley.
She has extensive experience in Alexander Technique, rehabilitative bodywork, Rolfing, Structural Integration and was a volunteer at the Acupuncture for AIDS center in Boston, MA.
As a Choreographer, she has shown her work at the Krannert Center for Performing Arts, Champaign, IL, Bushwick Arts Festival SITEFEST, NYC, Chez Bushwick's AMBUSH series, NYC, co-produced an evening length production at the Tank Theater, NYC with collaborator Bryan Campbell, and co-produced, with Caitlin Marz, a daylong performance as part of Bushwick Arts. She continues her professional dance work with regular classes and workshops most recently with Ultima Vez Dance Company in Brussels, Belgium. And is currently dancing with Choreographer Thomas Welsh Huggins as part of his ongoing work There is a Place.
Cadence lives in Brooklyn with studio regulars Jupiter, a giant Pitbull and Pigeon, a tiny Chihuahua. When not constantly teaching she can be found dunking in waterfalls in Ithaca, NY or eating something delicious in Queens.
